splitscreen

We fit two styles of roof for the Splitscreen:

Turret Top

The first is similar in style to the early Westfalia turret roof as fitted to the SO42. You cannot sleep in this roof but it does allow you to standup as you cook or change clothes. Our roof has the same look, feel and dimensions of the original SO42 Turret Top. It will fit on any Splitscreen van, apart from sunroof models and Sambas.

3/4 Length

Our other Splitscreen Roof is the first new roof manufactured for Splitscreens in over forty years.  It is a 3/4 length straight lift type, providing a six foot by 42 inch bed platform in the roof.  So now your kids can come on holiday with you! The fibreglass roof is a retro design based on the Canterbury Pitt, so it sits comfortably on your vehicle and doesn't scream out "look at my new roof".

Splitscreen Van

Turret Top Technical Info

The hole we cut in the steel roof of your van is approximately four feet by four feet and runs between the front and middle cross members. As no cross members are removed, the roof does not need any additional strengthening. We supply a plywood framework that is fitted around the cut hole. This enables the area to be trimmed. The fibre glass top comes in VW Pastel White L90D. We can supply it colour coded (at extra cost). Straight colours can be added to the gel coat of the fibre glass.

The canopy is a modern acrylic-coated polyester sail canvas that is available in a variety of colours (see the extras page to chose your colour). The material is impregnation coated, 100% polyester, abrasion, mildew and ultra-violet resistant and is produced with a clear seal coat to provide a high degree of water resistance. The canopy is included in the price of your roof.

The roof is available as a DIY kit. It would take a competent DIYer approx 2 days to fit and the kit is supplied with instructions and photos.

The lead time for the roof is roughly 3 weeks. For fitting, we will require your van for a week, and customers usually bring their van down on a Friday or Saturday and collect the following Friday or Saturday.

3/4 Length Technical Info

The hole we cut in the van roof is six feet long by 42 inches wide.  A curved 3mm steel strengthening crossmember is placed into the roof to replace the original crossmember and a 3mm steel framework is attached to this to support the bed and to add longitudinal strength to the roof.  The fibreglass roof is lifted with four external gas struts and has a framework at either end so the roof is stable in all weathers.

The fibreglass top comes in VW Pastel White L90D but we can colour code the roof to your choice. Straight colours are added to the gel coat of the fibre glass. (If you would like a metallic colour, please ring for details).

The canopy is available in a wide choice of colours and comes with two fly-screened side windows with velcro covers.  It is made from a modern acrylic-coated sail canvas (see the extras page to chose your colour). The material is impregnation coated, 100% polyester, abrasion, mildew and ultra-violet resistant and is produced with a clear seal coat to provide a high degree of water resistance. The canopy is included in the price of your roof.

The bed is a four part hinged platform that can provide a four, five or six foot platform for use as storage or a bed.  The bed is also removable so can be left at home if not needed.  It is available with three x two inch foam pads and zipped and piped cushion covers can be made in your choice of colour, in a marine grade vinyl.

The roof is also available as a DIY kit and will take a practical person roughly 3 days to fit.

The lead time for the roof is about 3 weeks. For fitting, we will require your van for a week, and customers usually bring their van down on a Friday or Saturday and collect the following Friday or Saturday.
