vw t2 westfalia roof vw t2 westfalia roof

type 2

We fit two styles of roof for the T2 Baywindow van:

Westy Type Elevating Roof

The first is based on the later Westfalia Roof that was fitted to 1974 VW Campervans onwards, but our roof will fit all bay window vans from 1969 to 1980. Over the cab area is a separate luggage rack. We can also supply our roof with a small front closing panel, which allows you to keep or fit an original 2 bow roof rack in place of the fibreglass luggage rack.

Our roof has the same look, feel and dimensions of the original. We fit a 43.5 inch x 6 foot bed into the roof. Once the roof is fitted the height of your van will be approximately 2 metres (although vans themselves do vary in height). Our roof is easier to raise and lower than the original Westfalia, as we use external gas struts and scissor hinges.

Straight Lift Roof

The second roof we supply is a straight lift 3/4 length type.  This is our new Baywindow roof which is the first new roof manufactured for Baywindows in over forty years.  It provides a six foot by 42 inch bed platform in the roof.  So now your kids can come on holiday with you! The fibreglass roof is a retro design based on the Canterbury Pitt, so it sits comfortably on your vehicle and doesn't scream out "look at my new roof".

Type 2 Baywindow Van

Westy Type Technical Info

The hole we cut in the steel roof of your van runs from just in front of the rear cross member to just behind the front cross member. A 3 mm mild steel framework is then fixed down both sides and across the rear of this hole. This framework strengthens the roof hole and supports the rear section of the bed. We then fit an aluminium strengthening cross member where the old factory cross member was to support the rear bed section and also to put the strength back into the steel roof.

The hinges are designed to lift the front of the roof by 43 inches and the back of the roof by 10 inches. These and the gas struts are fixed outside of the canopy to prevent any possible leak problems.

The fibre glass top comes in VW Pastel White L90D as standard. This can be colour coded from £100 plus vat (metallic colours are more). The canopy is a modern acrylic coated sail canvas that is available in a variety of colours (see the extras page to chose your colour). The material is impregnation coated, 100% polyester, abrasion, mildew and ultra-violet resistant and is produced with a clear seal coat to provide a high degree of water resistance. The choice of canopy colour (shown on our extras page) is included in the price of your roof.

Straight Lift Technical Info

The hole we cut in the van roof is 2 metres long by 109 cms wide.  A 3mm steel framework is attached down both sides, and across the rear of the cut hole. A 18 mm ply cross member is attached to the rear cross steel, to add strength and retain the shape of the curved roof. The fibreglass roof is lifted with four external gas struts and has a framework at either end so the roof is stable in all weathers. The fibreglass top comes in VW Pastel White L90D and we can colour code the roof with a straight colour added to the gel coat (from £60 extra).  (If you would like a metallic colour, please ring for details).

The canopy is made from a modern acrylic-coated sail canvas that is available in a variety of colours (see the extras page to chose your colour). The material is impregnation coated, 100% polyester, abrasion, mildew and ultra-violet resistant and is produced with a clear seal coat to provide a high degree of water resistance. The choice of canopy colour is included in the price of your roof (see extras page for colours).

The bed is a four part hinged platform that can provide a four, five or six foot platform for use as storage or a bed.  The bed is also removable so can be left at home if not needed.  The bed is available with three x two inch foam pads with zipped and piped cushion covers available in a range of colours in a marine grade vinyl.

The roof is also available as a DIY kit which will take a competent DIYer approx 3 days to fit. The kit comes supplied with instructions and photos.
